Flower spikes
Region
Mediterranean hillsides; gardens worldwide
Season
June · July · August
Where it comes from
Native to the western Mediterranean, especially Provence.
How it’s been used through history
Romans added it to bathwater — the name comes from lavare, to wash. Medieval hospitals strewed it for cleanliness, and Victorian households kept lavender water for headaches, sleeplessness and calm.
Lookalike warning
Lavandin hybrids contain more camphor and are harsher for sleep preparations. Look for the shorter, single-headed spikes of true lavender.
